Birkdale Retaining Wall Reconstruction

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Birkdale, Auckland
  • Project Type: Engineered Retaining Wall Replacement
  • Key Goal: Replace a failed retaining wall and extend it to reclaim usable land for the new homeowners.
  • Duration: 1 month

Project Goal

When our clients found a property they loved, a failed retaining wall posed a major obstacle. They engaged us to assess the feasibility and cost of a full replacement, providing them with the expert advice needed to confidently purchase their new home. Our primary goal was to not only replace the compromised structure but also extend it, transforming a problem area into valuable, usable land.

Anton and the team were great. The quote he gave us was way better than all of the others we looked at, he did an awesome job (removed and rebuilt failed load bearing retaining wall). He was super helpful through the whole process, will be coming back for any future work that needs doing.

Project Challenges

We overcame several key challenges on this project:

  • Council & Services Coordination: A sewer pipe located near the worksite required careful planning and local authority approval, which added to the project timeline.
  • Challenging Weather Conditions: Working through a wet Auckland winter meant we had to strategically plan our work around narrow windows of dry weather.
  • Unexpected Site Discovery: During excavation, we uncovered a historical dump site, which added a layer of complexity to the groundworks.

Our Solution & Process

Our solution was a meticulous, three-stage approach designed to manage the site constraints and weather. We worked in carefully planned phases, drilling piles and immediately concreting them, often on the same day, to maintain progress and structural integrity. This required precise coordination, including scheduling three separate concrete pump deliveries. After successfully setting all piles, we constructed the new timber rails and completed the structure with a robust backfill of scoria to ensure proper drainage. The result was a fully engineered, stable retaining wall that secured the property and gave the clients total peace of mind.

Points of Interest

While the wall’s position relative to the driveway meant it fell outside the requirements for a building consent, we believe in best practice. To guarantee the longevity and safety of the structure, we voluntarily engaged an engineer to design the retaining wall and provide professional oversight throughout the construction process. This commitment to quality engineering ensures the final build far exceeds standard requirements and provides a robust, long-term solution for our clients.
