Project Challenges

We managed several key challenges during this project.

  • Window Installation: A primary task was replacing the large garage door. We installed a matching double-glazed stacker window to bring in natural light while keeping a consistent look.
  • New Layout: We framed new timber partition walls inside the garage. This work created the separate bedroom, bathroom, and living areas.
  • Compliance: The conversion needed to meet modern building and health standards. This required careful planning for plumbing, drainage, and insulation.

Our Solution & Process

Our process began with major plumbing work. We cut the existing concrete slab to run new drainage for the bathroom. We also verified the slab had an under-slab damp-proof membrane, which stops moisture. After laying new pipes for the toilet, shower, and vanity, we patched the concrete. To meet Healthy Home standards, we added insulation to the new walls. We then completed all wiring and plumbing before closing the walls with GIB plasterboard. Flooring contractors installed carpet in the living areas and tiles in the bathroom. The project finished with the installation of a simple kitchenette that also serves as a laundry space.

Points of Interest

Building code updates often affect renovation projects. For instance, new rules require impermeable flooring within metres of any faucet. This means materials like tiles or vinyl must be used in these wet areas. Also, any alteration to an existing house now triggers a requirement to install smoke alarms throughout the entire home. This includes areas that were not part of the renovation.
