Project Goal
Our clients wanted to build a new deck elevated three metres above the ground. The deck would cover about 15 square metres. A key requirement was to make the area underneath a usable carport. This influenced our structural design to avoid any obstructive bracing under the deck.
Needed a builder in an area that I knew no one. Searched online for a builder and came across Red Square. Gave Anton a call and he was able to take the job on. Anton helped us renovate our house, kept us informed through the whole process. He was very patient with a sticky situation with a short term tenant and helped us navigate through it too. Now, the actual work is clean, tidy, and there were no short cuts he and the contractors are professionals and great to deal with as well. In short, love his work, love his contractor's and once he takes the job on we were kept informed about every single thing. 5 stars, would give more if I could.Khalida Simon
Project Challenges
The main challenge was in the design phase. We needed to engineer a strong, elevated deck that left the space below completely open for vehicle access. The previous structure had diagonal bracing that made parking impossible. Our design had to provide full structural support without any intrusive posts or braces in the carport area.
Our Solution & Process
This project began with careful planning and design. We worked with a draftsman on detailed plans, which we then submitted to the council for building consent. We also engaged geotech and structural engineers to ensure the foundation and bracing design was safe and suitable. Once approved, we started the build by constructing a retaining wall to form the carport space. We installed heavy-duty mm piles for the foundation. Then we built the timber frame, which was topped with pine decking and a matching timber balustrade. The project finished with a new concrete driveway and a proper drainage system.
Points of Interest
The previous deck had diagonal bracing underneath, making it impossible to park a car. We specifically designed the new posts and bracing to avoid any obstacles. The final design created a completely open carport space. As a result, the clients were able to park their large campervan underneath. We also had our electrician install a new outdoor power point for the campervan to be plugged in.
