Groundfloor Extension with Bedroom

Project Goal

Our goal was to expand the home’s living space with a new ground-floor room while completely transforming its street appeal. We designed a classic villa-style extension that would seamlessly integrate with the existing brick structure, adding both function and character.

Project Challenges

We overcame three key challenges:

• Architectural Integration: Flawlessly blending new timber villa cladding with the original brick facade.
• Live-in Client: Managing construction to minimize noise, dust, and disruption for the family living on-site.
• Site Complexity: Navigating difficult groundworks, which included breaking concrete and relocating a critical wastewater pipe.

Our Solution & Process

Our solution was a highly organised, step-by-step build. We began with careful site preparation, relocating services before pouring the new foundation. To ensure the family’s comfort, we completely sealed the main house from the work zone. We timed the main demolition for a dry spell. Tarps and plywood were enough to protect the house, so the client didn’t have to pay for shrink-wrapping. After framing the new room and roof, we meticulously installed classic weatherboards and colonial trims to achieve the authentic villa look. The extension was finished with fine interior carpentry, resulting in a high-quality space that beautifully enhances the original home.

Points of Interest

Along with the extension we also completed a second-floor alteration that extended the deck over the driveway. To ensure a car could still be parked below, we engineered a heavy-duty steel portal frame. By embedding robust, 10mm thick galvanized steel posts $2.5$ metres deep into the ground, we were able to support the entire deck extension without any intermediate columns. This solution created a completely open and unobstructed carport, seamlessly integrating the new structure with the practical needs of the property.
