Modern Kitchen Renovation in Army Bay

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Army Bay, Auckland
  • Project Type: Open-Plan Kitchen Renovation
  • Key Goal: To transform a dated, enclosed kitchen into a bright, open, and modern culinary space.
  • Key Materials: European Oak Benchtop, Ceramic Butler's Sink, Double-Glazed Window
  • Duration: 2.5 months

Project Goal

Our main goal for this kitchen renovation was to create a modern, open-plan space. We needed to remove an interior wall to connect the kitchen with the main living area. This would improve the flow of natural light and create a better view of Rangitoto Island. The homeowners remained in the house during the renovation, so we also focused on minimising disruption to their daily lives.

Project Challenges

We successfully managed three main challenges during this project:

  • Minimising Disruption: The family continued to live in the home, which required careful planning to keep the work area separate and safe.
  • Dust and Debris Control: We needed an effective way to stop construction dust from spreading throughout the main living area.
  • Maintaining Amenities: We had to provide the family with a functional temporary kitchen during the renovation period.

Our Solution & Process

Our process began by ensuring the clients were comfortable. We built a temporary partition wall to seal off the work zone from the rest of the house. We also set up a temporary kitchen in the laundry area. After these preparations, we demolished the old kitchen and removed a section of an interior wall to open up the space.

With the area cleared, we upgraded all the wiring, plumbing, and gas lines for the new layout. We installed new insulation and a double-glazed window to improve energy efficiency. After re-lining the walls with new plasterboard, we painted the room and installed underfloor heating and new tiles. The new cabinetry arrived on schedule for installation. We then fitted the custom oak benchtop and a classic ceramic butler’s sink. Our specialists completed the final plumbing and electrical connections before a professional clean, allowing us to hand over a beautiful new kitchen to our happy clients.

Points of Interest

To help the client manage their budget, we found a creative solution for the benchtop. We sourced a high-quality oak slab directly from Europe and had it cut into two halves for shipping. Each piece weighed about kg. Our team then finished and oiled the benchtop on-site. This approach saved the client approximately without compromising on quality or style.
